Skin care routine… Where do I start?

Skin care routine… Where do I start?

If you’re new to the scene, figuring out your everyday skin care can be tricky. With the amount of products, brands and techniques, it’s no wonder your head may be spinning when trying to design a routine. Everyone’s skin is very different, and different skin concerns need different products, but there are 3 essentials that you’ll find in every routine.

These essentials are the foundation of skin care. When repeated consistently, and correctly, this basic routine will be beneficial - no matter what your skin type!

Cleanse
As much as we don’t like to think about it, our skin can be the homes to a lot of unwanted nasties - oil, dirt, makeup, and other unwanted elements. Without properly cleansing, this buildup on the surface of our skin can cause blocked pores, which allows the bacteria to penetrate deeper, causing inflammation and acne.

So that being said, cleansing your face regularly is key to maintaining healthy looking and feeling skin. Depending on your skin type, it can also help boost hydration.

Cleansers to try:

  • Aspect Dr Mild Clean
  • Cosmedix Benefit Clean

  • Moisturise
No matter what your skin type, moisturising your skin is a must for your morning and nighttime skincare routines. Using a moisturising product (such as a face cream or oil) is essential to help replenish your skin with any moisture it may have lost after cleansing.

When your skin is properly hydrated, it will be stronger, plumper and more radiant looking. Moisturising can help with the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as help balance your skin’s natural oil production.

    Moisturisers to try:

  • Aspect Dr Resveratrol Moisturising Cream
  • Complete Skin Daily Defence

  • Protect
This goes without saying, protecting your skin is the #1 most important step in your routine. Products with SPF are very beneficial, protecting your skin from the sun’s powerful UV rays - the biggest culprit of causing wrinkles, loss of firmness, dullness and uneven pigmentation.

To avoid these visible signs of ageing, and reduce your risk of skin cancer, we recommend investing in a quality SPF product, such as a chemical sunscreen, to apply regularly.

    SPF products to try:

  • Aspect Sun Hydrating Face SPF 50+
  • Aspect Sun CC Cream SPF 50+

  • Add in other steps if needed (or wanted)
This is where it can get confusing, it can feel like a lot to take in. But it’s really quite simple, once you are happy with your routine you may want to add in more steps to pamper yourself more or target certain skin concerns, as needed. Here are steps you can add in:

    • Exfoliation - an additional step using alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) or beta hydroxy acids (BHAs), which work in different ways to slough off excess buildup on the skin's surface. Do not exceed once or twice per week unless stated otherwise on the product’s packaging.
    • Face masks - These can be used 1-2 times a week, and are great when wanting to target a specific skin concern. You can seek out masks with different ingredients to work on your skin - such as hydrating, clarifying, calming, and brightening masks.
    • Facial serums -  often formulated with a higher concentration of active ingredients, such as vitamin C and hyaluronic acid, serums work wonders in targeting your more specific skin concerns. Serums are best applied after cleansing, and before moisturiser.
